Chapter 12

As they rode, Val and Mack discussed their past. Val told him about her life in Shreveport and how she came to Texas as a mail order bride; only to end up in the clutches of Vernon Caffery. Mack told her about his father's murder, and how he became a bounty hunter by tracking the killers down.

"You knew I was coming back for you, didn't you?" Mack chuckled.

"I certainly hoped so," Val replied.

"No, you knew," Mack said. "You had me hooked the moment I laid eyes on you."

It was Val's turn to laugh.

"Perhaps I knew," she said softly.

"I'm not the best of men, Val," Mack said in a serious tone. "You could do better."

"Don't say that," Val replied. "You rescued me."

Val gave his muscular body an affectionate squeeze.

"When I was a little girl," she continued, "my mother read me a story about a princess who was rescued by a knight in shining armor. You're my knight in shining armor."

"You think so?" Mack asked, pleased with the compliment.

"I surely do," Val said.

They took a break in a pretty area by a small stream. Both of them found shade under a large tree. Mack put his arm around Val's shoulder, and she snuggled up next to him.

"You know," Mack said, "I'm thinking of giving up being a bounty hunter. There will come a time when my luck will run out."

"Sounds like a good idea," Val said.

"My father had a small ranch outside of El Paso," Mack continued. "Now, that I've got a stake, I'm thinking of going back there and working it again."

He looked into Val's eyes.

"How about pretending you came out to Texas to be my mail order bride, and working it with me? You can have the same thirty day trial period."

"I don't need any trial period," Val said.

She kissed him softly on the cheek.

"You know," Val continued, "I've never thanked you properly for saving my life."

Mack took her in his arms, and kissed her passionately on the lips.

"You're welcome," he smiled.
